TWO women have been sentenced after causing the death of a 63-year-old woman after a crash on the A34.

Susan Batchelor died a day after a collision on the northbound carriageway between the Milton and Marcham junctions at 2.42pm on Wednesday, September 4 2019.

The crash involved a silver BMW estate, driven by Emma Williams, and a silver Ford C-Max, driven by Elaine Harkins with Ms Batchelor as a passenger.

Ms Batchelor died the following day from severe whiplash.

She was a resident at Home Farm Trust in Milton Heights, a home which supports adults with learning disabilities.

Harkins is a carer at the home and had been taking Ms Batchlelor, known as Susie, to her GP surgery in Abingdon at the time of the crash.

Both women were charged with causing death by careless driving and stood trial at Oxford Crown Court last week after denying the offence.

However, a jury found both women guilty and both women were sentenced on Friday (April 5) to six months imprisonment, suspended for one year.

During the trial, it was heard that Williams, 29, of Priors Dean Road,  had pulled the BMW estate into a layby after driving the vehicle for about 45 minutes to an hour.

She had pulled over to ‘sort out the radio’ before driving out of the layby northbound into the slow lane.

However, she was seen to pull out on the A34 slowly and was ‘not accelerating’.

Harkins, 66, of Green Road, Didcot, was driving towards the BMW and through it was ‘quite far away’ and there was ‘plenty of time’ but crashed into the back of the BMW.
