FOOTBALL: Concords home in on more funds
Wantage Concords FC are busy raising funds as they aim to move into their first permanent home since they were founded in 1969.
The club, who run teams for youngsters between seven7 and 15 years, have planning permission for a new clubhouse, pitch and training facilities at Tugwell Field to the east of Wantage.
Chairman Peter Garratt said: "We have major growth aspirations.
"With so many local young people wanting to play organised football, Wantage should be able to provide them with a ground of their own, and that is what we are trying to achieve."
Developing the Tugwell site will cost in excess of £200,000, and while the club hope to secure a large part of this from the Football Foundation and other sources of grant funding, they are also seeking donations and sponsorship from local businesses and other organisations.
So far more than £5,000 has been raised through fundraising events, the next of which is a dinner at Wantage Civic Hall on Saturday June 14.
Former Liverpool keeper Bruce Grobbelaar, a celebrity well-known for his activities both on and off the pitch, will be the guest speaker, supported by stand-up comedian Barry York.
Tickets are £45 per head. Sponsorship and advertising opportunites are available.
