Distressed
I am amazed and distressed to learn that the future of the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre (NOC) is in doubt. The Strategic Health Authority (SHA) is looking at how the NOC's expert and world-renowned services could be incorporated into a larger NHS Trust or independent sector organisation.
Changes in the financial rules will result in the underfunding of costly expert services, which are available for difficult cases from the whole of the UK as well as abroad, and for the first time the NOC funds will be in deficit.
I cannot believe that anyone could consider dismantling an organisation that works so well and is such a beacon of excellence. It seems to me that the SHA is acting unfairly and putting the importance of money far ahead of the needs of patients across the country.
The SHA should ensure that the NOC is properly funded for the work it does and support it in its application to become a Foundation Trust.
