Not the answer

As a patient of the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, I was appalled to read a recent newspaper report that the NOC is once again to be plunged into a funding crisis by the crass actions of the Department for Health.

The proposed absorption of the NOC by the Strategic Health Authority into a larger NHS Trust is not the answer to this funding problem, but a mere sweeping of the problem under the carpet.

The solution is for the Department of Health to continue funding the shortfall caused by the national Payments by Results scheme not fully covering the specialist treatment costs at the NOC and for the SHA to push ahead with the Foundation Trust Application for the NOC. This would allow the NOC to continue with its pioneering work on a sound financial footing.
