Some street lights could face black-out

Oxfordshire County Council has announced plans to switch off some street lights in a bid to cut carbon emissions.

The council said it wanted to switch off lampposts between 12.30am and 5.30am on short sections of suitable road across the county.

Town and parish councils have been informed about the proposals, which could come into force by spring 2009.

Well this should hasten the enviro- commies vision of the UK returning to the Dark Ages.

The UK produces 2.2% of global CO2 emissions.

Assuming that these have anything to do with global warming, what difference is switching off street lights going to make?

Of the UK's 2.2%, 25% is due to transport, with 60% of that down to personal transport such as cars.

If all UK cars account for a third of one percent of global CO2, what impact would us all changing to SMART cars, buses and trains (given that they also chug out emissions and often run virtually empty)or forgoing any personal freedom to travel have?

We can take SENSIBLE measures such as reducing packaging, switching off unused appliances, lights etc, recyling, travelling by public transport, bicycle or foot IF APPROPRIATE , but it's time to face the fact that 'environmentalism' is being used by the Government to raise revenue, the Council to save money and individuals to give themselves a sense of camraderie, self- importance and moral superiority over the rest of us who do our best and still have to put up with their endless intolerance and finger wagging.
