Serious crash closes road

The A4074 is closed in both directions at the Golden Balls roundabout following a serious accident.

It is thought a motorcyclist has been involved in a crash with a lorry at the B4015 Oxford Road, which is also closed.

Emergency services on scene following the smash which happened at about 9.30am. Police advise traffic to avoid the area.

Not suprising really....it's dangerous enough in a car! For some reason people don't know how to go around roundabouts and stay in lane.....you often see people in the left lane cutting straight across and blocking people turning right or going straight on. Grrrrr

I agree its quite a dangerous road and roundabout. Its about time road markings were put on the road leading upto the roundabout so people know what lane to be in. People in the left hand lane should use it to go left (RAF base, henley turn and to go onto third exit). The right hand lane is to go right (crowmarsh) or to go all the way around. Thats how its stated in the highway code.

Wrong roundabout. The Golden Balls roundabout is the one next to Notcutts.

This incident occurred between the Berinsfield roundabout and Golden Balls not AT the roundabout - though your comments are valid nonetheless.

I know the accident was at a different roundabout to the one you describe, but I can't help but agree with what you say. I used to use the left-hand lane at that particular roundabout as that is the correct one to use according to the highway code if going straight on, but soon realised after having people repeatedly cut across me that it was far safer to be in the right hand lane and be very careful when cutting across to leave the roundabout. To this day, it still feels 'wrong' to be in the right hand lane (and it is!) but it does seem more logical as straight on in this case is actually more of a right hand turn. Road makings are needed to define which lane should be used, especially for people who are not familiar with the road layout.

Nothing to do with roundabouts at all (or road markings)!

This does come within a couple of days of the police campaign on motorcycle accidents. Without wishing in any way to prejudge the causes of this particular case, the A4074 is not exactly unknown for the antics of lunatic bikers....

Given that the road is closed for x number of hours while the Police investigate the accident, why do they not then publish their findings so that people can be made aware of why these accidents occur?
We can all make presumptions, but unless we know why, how can we ever either adjust our own driving, or learn to be made aware of what factors could lead to us being involved in an accident in these 'notorious' spots?
All that ever seems to happen is that the speed limit is cut. Yet if hundreds of people can use this road everyday at the current speed limit without crashing, why when 1 person does crash and they have (or even have not been speeding) do we all get forced to slow down?

According to the Oxford Mail site, the road is now open again. Thanks for the update wally herald people. *sigh*

Anon - Their article that reports on the death of the motorcyclist clearly statesthe road is expected to be shut for a couple of hours, that means it will open about 3pm-4pm.

I suggest you engage brain before opening mouth in future.

Some of the worst idiots are those that use the right hand lane to go straight on when the exit road is a single carriageway. People quite rightly using the left lane to go straight on suddenly find a car trying to shunt them in the offside rear quarter because there is no room for it to get it. It’s about these roundabouts were properly marked. Left lane for turning left and straight on Right lane for turning right.

The crash for all you idiots that get your facts wrong was at the junction with the side road from Burcot. Nowhere near any roundabout except for saddo's that make things up and need to get a life.

no peter it was not. it was just off the dual carriage way actually just after the 2 lanes become 1. so ur facts are wrong too... and the papers have also got the fact that the body was found in a layby wrong too..it was infact found in the slip road which is north bound. should the van of been turning right there?there is no sign to say not to but no road markings to say you can?on A roads and motorways you can not cross another carriage way to enter a slip road.

a traffic policeman has told me that when the turning is past 12o clock as in the case of crowmarsh roundabout then you should be in right hand lane that is what is in high way code crowmarsh is near 1 oclock so to carry on on reading road you should be in right hand lane

I read with interest all the comments about the crowmarsh roundabout. Having driven through it for many years I had always assumed the right hand lane was for right and straight ahead there, so I always used it so in my lorry. It's logical that way as there are 2 exits beforehand. I ish the highays agency would address the issue at that roundabout as I have had several near misses there.

Nope, that would only be the case if directed to do so by road markings. The correct way would in fact be to be in the left hand lane but indicate right once on the roundabout until level with the second exit at which point indicate left to show that you intend to exit at the third. Right hand lane is ONLY for turning right or going all the way round. That way no one will be in any doubt about where you intend to go.

Oh well, another Sunday past, and absolutely full of the sound of bikers giving it full tilt on the bypass (A4074).

I listened from my house while doing a spot of gardening and waxing the car, to these so called 'responsible bikers', tanking it around the perimeter of Wallingford. Is it really that surprising when one of them come a cropper.

They are nothing more than idiots that put other road users in danger, let alone themselves.

And before anyone starts having a go that i'm blaming the biker that died in this article, i'm not. I'm merely pointing out that I regards most bikers as idiots, contaversial.....may be.....but i bet most residents that can hear them on the weekend agree with me.

It's about time they realised the rules of the road apply to them to.......shock horror!
