Care home plans fail to find favour

NEW plans for a care home in Wallingford have found no favour with the town council and local residents.

The town council voted unanimously that the plan for the 28-bed home should be rejected. They backed complaints from local residents as they did when the first plan went in earlier this year for a larger home on the site in Charter Way.

The site already has planning permission for ten flats which residents have not objected to.

Jonathan Jack, of Charter Way, told the councillors that he envisaged serious problems with parked vehicles, delivery lorries, noise and a drop in the value of his home if the care home were built.

Council member Theresa Jordan said she felt a care home was inappropriate in a solidly residential area. She said: "A care home should be in an area of some beauty so residents can have a decent view and garden area to enjoy. In Charter Way there is nothing to see.

"We owe old people more than shutting them up in little boxes like this would be."

Member Lynda Atkins said she was concerned about the impact on residents of Charter Way and member Pat Granados said she was concerned about the bulk of the building and the loss of trees.

The final decision will be made by South Oxfordshire District Council.
