ENVIRONMENT Agency officers are investigating possible legal action after a leaked substance turned a brook bright green.

The investigators were called to Pill Ditch, Grove, on Wednesday last week after residents noticed the water had changed colour.

Scientists found the substance was not toxic and would naturally break down in the water. No wildlife was harmed.

Agency spokesman Maria Goodall said: "The water is slowly returning to normal now and the substance started to break down in the water on Wednesday afternoon.

"We know the source and the substance and it's non-toxic. We cannot release any information because there might be legal action taken, we don't know at this stage."

Mother-of-four Hazel Smith, 38, of Mayfield Avenue, Grove, saw the brook change colour in about an hour. She said: "It was very green, it's the greenest green you have ever seen in your life. It looked like it was from some sort of spillage.

"We were concerned about the wildlife and the effect on the water table.

"The brook is full of toads, frogs, tadpoles and shrews and it could have been potentially lethal to it all. The fish looked like they were trying to get to clean water."
