Power firm's grant sparks Scouting joy
AN Abingdon Scout group is celebrating after a cash grant helped restore its flood-hit hut.
The 2nd Abingdon Scouts were in despair last summer when the widespread flooding which swamped swathes of Oxfordshire ruined the floor of the building in Farm Road.
But a new-look hut was unveiled after months of repairs, thanks to ongoing fundraising efforts in the town and a £1,500 donation from Southern Electric. That money, added to an insurance payout, has enabled the Scout group to completely transform its regular meeting place.
Scout group chairman Anthony Yates, an electrical fitter for Southern Electric, said: "The floods caused huge disruption last year.
"The water didn't actually flow through the building, but it caused enough damage to the foundations and flooring to mean it was unsafe for use. We were able to claim for the replacement of the main hall floor and other floors in the building. However, the insurance did not cover the cost of hiring alternative accommodation."
Mr Yates asked whether Southern Electric could help through its charity fund, Into Action, set up to help local communities.
He said: "They said 'Yes' and came up with a £1,500 donation, which enabled us not only to keep going, but, along with other donations, to add a rear wheelchair access. The ramp means we can access our field at the back of the building from the main hall, which has allowed us to carry out activities in a secure environment."
The group was also able to completely redecorate the hall and lay new carpets.
Mr Yates said: "The Scouts were all very excited and it's been great to celebrate moving in again."
The 2nd Abingdon Scouts, which relies subscription and fundraising, is raising money for its annual community fireworks display.
Future plans also include raising enough money to resurface the car park at Farm Road, which was also damaged from the flooding.
The 2nd Abingdon Scouts has a membership of 106 boys and girls, aged six to 15, and was founded in 1922 in Ock Street. Its Sea Scout Troop is the only troop in Oxfordshire to have Royal Navy recognition.

I was a member of the 2nd North Berks Scout Troop in the 50's. At that time the HQ was in Sellwood Road. And I lived but a few doors away.
(When Abingdon was in Berkshire, before Oxford annexed great swathes of the county!)

yes it is the same group.The land at sellwood road was sold to the builders with the agreement that they build us a new "hut".This hut is owned and maintained by the second abingdon scout group we are a very healthy and vibrant group with royal naval recognision for our sea scouts and a total of over 100 boys and girls.I have heard stories of the days of the old hut at sellwood road, and there are still leaders here who are active with this group now ,who were involved at sellwood road.If you would like any more info please e mail me .I am the current chairman and was the person in the news article.
