Reservoir plan on agenda

WATER will be on the agenda at a public meeting about the plan to build a reservoir between Abingdon and Wantage on Friday, May 16, in the Memorial Hall.

Officials from Thames Water, the Environment Agency and Oxfordshire County Council will be at the event, which has been organised by the Reservoir Affected Parishes Group (RAP). It starts at 7.30pm.

this reservoir was first brought up in 1988 ish when i was living in drayton, they said either airport of reservoir. anyway they already planned for reservoir because why else would the council build a crap marina in abingdon with pumping station and over priced house, not to look nice no its so that they can feed water to new reservoir, then they leave things to calm down and be forgotten about a few years, then start laying big blue water pipes (not gas pipes)across landscape to fill the thing up with, think about it .......

I never though of that Ady there does seem to be a lot of big blue pipes going into the ground near to the Health Centre in Grove are they going in anywhere else ?

I know there has been plans for the resevoir for quite some time alot of people are apposed to itis it really that much ofa bad idea ? I assume that it will be able to be used by the public for recreational activites walking picnics and some water sports.. I think it is a good idea...

What?!! A good idea? Are you in the pay of Thames Water Dean? Or is it because you don't live along the potential route of all the lorries moving earth that you think recreational facilities are a good enough reason for the biggest act of environmental vandalism visited on Steventon in its' long history? If you need occupying, go to your local leisure centre or take a canal boat down the Thames.

Third attempt at commenting. willl it work this time? I'll keep it short. NO, DEAN, IT WOULDN'T BE A GOOD IDEA!!!!!
Posted by: Dean, Grove on 11:51am Tue 6 May 08
No fay I am not in the pay of thames water, I personally feel that the building of a resevoir would be a good idea for the reasons mentioned in my previous post,No i dont live near to the area where it is to built either so i therefore accept your comments on the traffic and earth moving issue.. HOWEVER your reply is totally un called for you are able to put your views across with out being so aggressive and confrotnational.. Based on your comment I will have to say that I will FULLY support the planned resevoir and hope you personally have to endure months /years of torment whilst it is built...

How interesting, Dean, that you took my comments as aggressive. Your reply to me is both personal and abusive. I was asking a perfectly valid question, as I fail to understand what other possible motive you would have for thinking this reservoir is a good idea. How petty that you would wish such an appalling act of ecological vandalism on a community in the interest of tormenting someone who disagrees with you.

Good point, Ady. I suspect the power of Thames Water is such that they will get what they want, and have already begun the ground work. It's a tragedy that somewhere as beautiful as the proposed site is to be ravaged to provide water for people who lives hundreds of miles from here.
Dean, I have to say it mate: if you want to have a nice picnic there is no shortage of locations here now. If you need recreation, try boating on the Thames. Recreational facilities aren't a good enough reason for this monstrosity to be built.

Well Fay yes my comments were intened to be persoanl and abusive as thats how I took your comments to me so tough luck.. Gordy in Abingdon however has got the right attitude and haad you replied to me with a view to have a decent debate over this issue then my comments would NOT have been aimed at you personally. I also find your comments very sarcastic hence my reply.

I simply dont understand how the building of a resevoir can be detremental to the area if you feel you have vaild points to make please do so but please make them in a positive way as i have said i dont know any details of this proposal simply what has been posted on this website.

Dean, you shouldn't have commented in a supportive way on the reservoir if you know nothing about the impact it will have!! Fellings are running extremely high about this, hence the heated reply that you were so surprised at. If it impacted on YOUR life you wouldn't be so enthusiastic about it. Let me enlighten you:
Heavy traffic for years, noise and pollution for years, more insects througout all the summers following construction, a Thames Barrier size grass embankment casting a shadow over Steventon village, a heightened flood risk in a place devestated by floods a year ago, a drop in house values along the Hanney road. You are as capable of abuse and sarcasm as I am, and seem to have the upper hand right now.
Well Fay yes my comments were intened to be persoanl and abusive as thats how I took your comments to me so tough luck..

Fair play to you.

lol! Let's not forget the original story. The smooth PR of the Thames Water Publicity machine is full of happy people walking hand in hand, sailing in shiny new boats in the sunshine and having lovely picnics. However, the reality is a massive construction project which will decimate the local environment, impact on housing prices and make the lives of people I care about a misery during construction, and all to provide LESS WATER than they are losing through leaking pipes which they should be mending with the money we already pay them. Nothing short of scandalous.

Thank you Fay !! when i first posted my comment i did not expect such a kurt response i can honestly say i was expecting a civilised reply along the lines of "Heavy traffic for years, noise and pollution for years, more insects througout all the summers following construction, a Thames Barrier size grass embankment casting a shadow over Steventon village, a heightened flood risk in a place devestated by floods a year ago, a drop in house values along the Hanney road"

Why on earth could you not have said that intially and saved both of ourselves alot of wasted time. As I pointed out i do not know much about this proposal and want to no more about any negative aswell as any positive points (if any ). I was simply saying origianlly that I thought it was a good idea however the points you have now senisbly made do swing my decsion more in your favour rather than that of Thames Water.

Regards

the reservoir is 30-40 ft deep and the soil taken out will be used to make the embankment 80 ft high 22 mile circumfrence approx,so not only an eyesore but it also says TARGET, ie terroist (remember the dam busters raids) if it went pop Wantage GROVE,abingdon, steventon, drayton and all other villages within 10 mile will be flooded, with 1000s lives lost ,all to feed london water, show what you can get if you pay the right athouritys.. and ruin oxfordshire yet again,

This reservoir will have no impact on water shortage in the south east of England. According to the BBC news website the new reservoir will only supply an extra 350m litres of water a day, the majority of which is needed in London. But yet 900m litres of water a day is being lost through leaky pipes under the streets of London. So to make up for the daily loss of water in London and cater for new future requirements, this reservoir is already too SMALL. It should be at least 3 or 4 times bigger!
