Student elected to national Youth Parliament

A YOUNG politician has been elected to represent the views of his classmates in the nationwide Youth Parliament.

Chris Tolley, 17, was elected by pupils at Larkmead School, in Faringdon Road, Abingdon, to be their Member of Youth Parliament (MYP).

He, along with his deputy Sarah Flemming, attends a regional assembly every six weeks in Kent and contributes to the national assembly once a year.

The Youth Parliament represents the voices of pupils and fights for regional and national changes.

Chris, who studies history at Larkmead School and English language, film studies and government and politics at Abingdon and Witney College, is the first MYP to officially represent South Oxfordshire.

He said: "Myself and my deputy represent the views of all the young people in South Oxfordshire and the Vale of White Horse, which includes any issue that affects them.

"In the region we found that the biggest issue was transport. Obviously this is a difficult issue as the bus companies are privately run.

"We are in the process of coming up with a survey to collect some figures to see who wants a better bus service."

Chris used humour to draw in the votes.

Wearing a fez and glasses, Chris urged the young voters with the slogan 'Don't be a wally, vote for Tolley'.

He said: "It's a really good opportunity. Obviously, it's going to look good on any CV and it's a really good way to get involved with politics in your area.

"So many young people are frustrated with not having a voice and so it's a fantastic opportunity to give that to them."

Chris Harris, headteacher at Larkmead School, said: " We put an increasing amount of responsibility into different students and it's great to see one of our senior students taking a national leadership role and it really models the kind of involvement we would like our students to follow."
