Sitcom filming comes to town

A FILM crew from BBC Studios was in Abingdon last week to shoot a new sitcom set in the town.

Abingdon's 19-year-old Tim Dawson penned the script for Coming of Age while at Abingdon and Witney College.

The sitcom was piloted last year and BBC3 has commissioned a series of six episodes, to be shown in the autumn.

As the sitcom is set in the town and centres on six of Mr Dawson's friends, most of the filming has taken place in Abingdon.

The crew filmed at sites in the area last week, including Tilsley Park.

Mr Dawson said: "It's going very well. We have done a lot of stunt work. On location we have run someone over and we have thrown people out of windows. We have a proper stunt man who does Last of the Summer Wine, which is great for me as I love Last of the Summer Wine. It's extremely weird as I went down on the first day of shooting and there is about 50 people, as it's quite a big production, all working on it.

It's really weird seeing all these people — all because I wrote a script and they have all arrived to make it happen
Nineteen-year-old scriptwriter Tim Dawson

"It's really weird seeing all these people - all because I wrote a script and they have all arrived to make it happen.

"It's really, really strange seeing people speaking your lines in every detail, it's weird people putting in all this effort."

He added: "We have actually been in the college and all over Abingdon, so it's all going to be completely specific to the area, so, hopefully, local people will enjoy it."

Mr Dawson's mentor is scriptwriter Paul Mayhew-Archer, co-writer of The Vicar of Dibley, who also lives in Abingdon.

Mr Mayhew-Archer was giving a talk at a school in the town when Mr Dawson introduced himself.

He then "bombarded" Mr Mayhew-Archer with scripts - and he passed them on to a producer friend and his agent.

The series looks at the lives of six teenagers and stars Tony Bignell, of Titty Bang Bang, Hannah Job, from Saturday Night Fever, and Ceri Phillips, from Casualty.

A range of young unsigned bands have been picked to provide original music.
