A postman has been jailed after being caught stealing cash from birthday and Christmas cards.

Magistrates told Stuart Crayford, 38, of Winchester Way, Wantage, he was guilty of a serious breach of trust.

Crayford admitted stealing between £400 to £500 from greetings cards. Burned envelopes were found at his home.

Didcot Magistrates' Court heard that he was caught after a Royal Mail 'sting' operation earlier this year.

Crayford admitted three counts of theft - including 95 greetings cards - and one count of intending to delay 3,503 postal items.

He was sentenced to a total of eight months in prison.

Jailing him, magistrates' chairman Jane Moreton said: "The fact was that the greetings cards were mainly going to children, which we feel made it a very unpleasant crime."

Speaking after the case today, Royal Mail spokesman Tom Prendergast stressed that the vast majority of postal workers were honest and hardworking.

He added "We have a zero tolerance approach to any dishonesty, and that stance is shared by the overwhelming majority of postmen and women, who do all they can to protect the mail and deliver it safely.

"We will always seek to prosecute the tiny minority of people who abuse their position of trust.

"Royal Mail customers should be confident in our services and systems, but where we are alerted to problems, either through our own stringent checks or from information supplied by our customers, we take decisive action to investigate."

All the incidents happened while the married father worked at Wantage delivery office, in Church Street, between March 2007 and April 2008.

Emma Thacker, prosecuting, told the court because Crayford never stole postal packets from his own round, ten colleagues were put under suspicion for missing mail.

He was caught after six packages, some containing £5 notes and DVDs, were put in bundles he dealt with - but were never delivered.

Ms Thacker said when Royal Mail investigators searched Crayford's home, carrier bags full of postal items were found hidden in his garage, shed and downstairs toilet. Four of the specially-placed packages were also found in his vehicle.

Opened packets were found in his recycling bin and burned remains of undelivered post were discovered strewn in a flower bed.

A ruby solitaire ring, worth £194, was also found.

Ms Thacker said: "There were clearly a lot of postal packages and a lot of the packages were cards, children's cards, which were specifically targeted as they were likely to contain money."

Kate MacNab, defending, said Crayford was in financial difficulties and had let temptation get the better of him.

One Wantage resident who was affected by Crayford's dishonesty criticised the sentence.

Widower Ray Reynolds, 77, was frequently forced to ask solicitors to resend mail to his Springfield Road house because it went missing - adding to his bill for legal services.

He said: "He used to say: 'Having trouble with your post?' when it was him doing it all the time.

"His sentence isn't enough."

I also think that someone else has something to do with missing post in Wantage sorting office.
Both myself and my boyfriend had approx 7 pieces of mail that we know of not arrive which was posted out with proofs of posting to our address in Grove - in June 2008 which NEVER arrived.
After reporting this to the sorting office in Wantage was "we will keep an eye on it from now on". they didn't even ask my address !!!
so how can they possibly monitor it.
Post gets later and later each week, snail mail is quicker !
Get your acts together we pay enough for our postage.
Let's hope some private company buys it out and gives us a better service, no wonder local post offices are closing down.

In the last 2 months royal mail have "lost" 3 items of my post. The fact that they were all games console games or CD's should suggest this is not random. They need to sort their staff out

come on guys. you really are being quite shortsighted. the poor man has obviously been through the mill and doesn't deserve your spiteful character assasination.with the credit crunch and rising prices in the food and transport industries,he is just doing what most of us would do given the opportunity.leave him alone you bunch of bullies!!!

I think you should leave him and his family alone. I am sure have all been through enough. There are people out there who have done a lot worse and are walking the streets and this man was desperate and now he has been taken away from the people he loves, where the justice in that !!!!

This 'man' is my cousin, although I don't condone what he did, he was going through a very tough time with children to raise. There are alot more serious crimes going on in the uk at the moment and he was a desperate man where the government had failed him.

I myself am going through a very tough time at the moment with the credit crunch and have recently been laid off from my job as a result, although I don't have kids to raise I am still having a very tough time. I believe that he is victim at the end of this as the royal mail salary did not reflect the steep rise in living costs for both him and his family.

Now please, you have had your say and my cousin has been sentenced, let him live his life and leave him and his family alone.

I have no sympathy for him, I am one of the 10 honest Posties that he was stitching up, he got what he deserved, should have been more.

As for the wage and the credit crunch, why didn't he just do overtime like the rest of us to get more money honestly!!!

He would have been paid money if he had bothered to deliver the leaflets in his garage, his excuses are rubbish.

he got off lightly.......what he has admitted to and what he actually got away with are two different things. digusting behaviour, and anyone who is defending him obviously hasn't had things "lost" in the post by scumbags like this.

He's not a scumbag , he was a desperate man trying to provide for his family.
He's done a crime and is now doing the time so please be nice and think of his wife and children , they dont need anymore grief at what must be a very hard time for them !

Lots of us are having a hard time - we don't all resort to stealing from others thank goodness. No doubt some of these gifts were sent by others also having a hard time and who may have had to replace the "lost" item. Indefensible.

I'm having a hard time, Grove says...
1:12pm Wed 20 Aug 08

I'm having a hard time with the cost of living increase. I'm gong to apply for his job at royal mail that pays far more than the minimum wage and then steal his kids birthday cards as it's obviously not such a big deal!!!

Okay he did the crime. It was wrong and we know it. BUT, where I just dont get the sentancing.......las
t month a Crackhead from Oxford stole 36,000 grand......THATS RIGHT, £36000 From her employers and got a suspended sentance, because 'she got off the Crack' PATHETIC. This old postie deserved what he got, but come on, there are bigger fish to fry in society, much bigger. So theres the deal, steal 36 big ones, and get off, or, steal a few bits of post and get a sentance, it just doesn't make sense.

This man deserved to be punished, no question. Is the punishment in line with the crime or what we see as parallel or worse - I don't think so. There are many examples we see daily of others who seem to 'get away with' worse especially if you are a celbrity with funding to buy the best leagal advice. But what about the wife and children of Mr Crayford? Their details including address have been published in the papers and internet. The children (who are young and innocent to the crime) will no doubt suffer unwanted attention of some kind. I think there has been some rather sensationalistic journalism by the papers. The vast majority of items 'withheld' were leaflets that most don't want anyway. He should have delivered them but it's a shame the papers bias implied he had thousands of birthday cards hidden at home. I think he has been sentenced as an example to others but let the wife and children be. They already have their dirty laundry aired in public regarding debts etc. Now she will have to cope on her own over the coming months - give her a chance to do right for the children. The spiteful comments being posted are unnecessary and upsetting to innocent family members. Come on journalists lets have some accurate reporting. Was this really the most significant item to warrant front page coverage and extended news on the BBC? He stole a £500, a ring and had a pile of junk mail in his garage. Nothing else was a bigger story than this? Come off it!

So Stuart the postie done wrong, so do lot of others when u have got a pound in your pocket everyone your friend but when something goes wrong why put it all over the papers why dont't you give it a rest. Think of his wife and children at this hard time. Our post arrive today at 1.30pm what a shoddy service. plus when you get the post it belongs to another address but you dont publish the service you are provideing. keep your chin up Stuart wont be long. love to your family.

It's fair enough to point out that his wife and children will suffer. We should leave them alone, or if in contact with them, treat them kindly.

However the people commenting that Stuart had stolen less than other thieves, etc, seem to miss the fact that we don't expect drug addicts and people in general, to be honest. However, to be a postie is to be in a position of trust . To steal while in this position of trust, and especially to implicate others is a worse crime than stealing when just an ordinary person. It's the violation of the trust that society places, and the posties accept upon themselves when they take the job, that really shocks and offends. And stealing from children is just low any way you slice it. I hope he can learn from his experience, and then go home and support his family honestly, and that the public will then let bygones be bygones.

Listen, people make mistakes and we've all done things we shouldn't have at some stage in our lives. The man has abused his position of trust and been punished. Let his story act as a deterant to others when they consider straying off line. He has temporarily ruined his life, brought shame on his family and subjected them to even more hardship than before. Let him serve his sentence and move on.
