Town's CCTV coverage given boost

A TENTH crime-busting CCTV camera will be installed in Didcot to help catch criminals.

The camera will be switched on at the junction of Broadway and High Street by South Oxfordshire District Council in the next few months.

The council said there was a gap in surveillance in the area because of changes to the road layout in the town.

Mark Bradfield, crime reduction officer at Didcot police, welcomed the move. He said: "The more cameras, the better. It is a good crime-reduction measure for the safety of the public. The cameras are a useful tool for us in dealing with all sorts of crime, from thefts to assault."

Dorothy Brown, cabinet member for community safety at South Oxfordshire District Council, said: "We were finding that now we have made changes to the town centre layout, the area around the junction of Broadway and High Street is much busier.

"The cameras in Didcot are all working well and they are picking up over 40 incidents each month and helping the police to make arrests.

"This camera will give the police an extra helping hand in deterring and detecting any crime or anti-social behaviour in the area."

The most recent camera installed was outside the cinema, at the top of Orchard Street.

The council said it could not yet estimate the cost of installing the camera.

It said it was aware of recent requests to install cameras in areas outside the town centre, such as Lostock Place, Ladygrove.

But he emphasised it was council policy to install static cameras in its town centres.
