A CONSULTANT at Bromley Hospital has issued advice for residents on how to look after their elderly relatives this winter.
Dr Aza Abdulla, who is a consultant in elderly medicine, said elderly people should keep warm, wearing layers of clothing and using an electric blanket at night.
He said one of the prime causes of the elderly ending up in hospital is dehydration so they should drink six to eight cups of liquid daily.
And other ways to ensure a healthy winter are eating plenty, getting regular check-ups, having the flu vaccine and regular exercise while avoiding over exertion which could strain the heart.
More information about looking after elderly relatives is available in the Help the Aged advice leaflet "Keep out the Cold".
