Jobless total rises again

The number of people out of work and claiming Jobseekers Allowance in the county has gone up for the fifth month in a row.

A total of 3,820 claimants are gistered for the benefit in Oxfordshire, a rise of 58 on the previous month.

But the overall percentage of jobseekers remains at 0.9 per cent, with 425 fewer people claiming dole than a year ago.

Oxford had the highest unemployment rate in the county, with 1,526 claimants or 1.4 per cent while West Oxfordshire had the lowest with 372 or 0.6 per cent. The Vale of the White Horse had the lowest, with just 446 or 0. 6 per cent.

Nationally, the number of people seeking benefit increased by 7,200 to 806,300, according to the Office for National Statistics.
